SAN CHA

San Cha

She is the diva of dark pop music based out of the San Francisco area. She is young, vibrant, and brilliant with her lyrics. Inspired by many Latin and also American artists she has infused that into her music. The first time I heard her cover of the 80's big pop hit Sweet Dreams by The Eurythmics, I was hooked and had to hear more and find out who she was. If you're looking to get some side action, or need a mistress, then San Cha's music is the pill you need, to release the beast within. She has a lot to offer and without a doubt she is a rising star.

Interview

Raven: Hello how are you?

San Cha: Good thanks, still at work for some reason I thought I was earlier lol!

Raven: You're starting to make a name for yourself in the music world. What made you want to become a singer and how long have you been singing?

San Cha: Usually when I see something I want to do and envision myself doing it, it always happens. I used to love Gloria Trevi, I used to watch her movies and her TV shows. She was WiLD! She was my early motivation towards becoming an attention whore. Must have been the her freedom and her energy that really made me want to be on a stage. I started to love Selena and Fey and I'd sing to them in my room all day. I wanted to do nothing more. I was so shy then, it was like my door to freedom. Complete freedom is what I really long for.
Singing, I've been doing alone in my room since I can remember. I've been singing in public since I was 11 in the church choir. In school at 15. Outside of school I started performing at open mics since like 2007. First at jazz piano bars. Then at songwriter nights, just me and a guitar. It's probably been 2 or 3 years since my first show.

Raven: How far would you like to with your music?

San Cha: I guess that's a problem I have because sometimes I think I want to stay independent no matter what. So as far as that can get me, because I think being a sancha, as a meaning of a sancha you're suppose to be the side.As opposed to being the main thing and I don't want anyone to idolize me. I guess I want to be underground and not on the pop charts.

Raven: If you had to Describe San Cha how would you put it into words?

San Cha: What it means is mistress, and I separated the words so it would have a religious context in SAN CHA you know. Sancha to me it's kind of like the alternative, the one who's going to say what she wants, because she's not the wifey, she's not being controled by that person, she doesn't belong to anyone. She's just the side, does what she wants, says what she wants, isn't apologetic, sneaky.. she has to be you know, and it's not her problem at the end of the day. I use it as a metaphor musically, where as everyone has there Lady Gaga, there Madonna, or Britney Spears, like they have there gods. I'm just like if you need a break I'm here lol

Raven: Well your music is good, I've been following you for a bit now, and love your cover of Sweet Dreams.

 San Cha: Aww thank you

Raven: How would you describe your style in fashion and in your music?

San Cha: Well right now, I don't know why, but I've been feeling black and see through is a lot of what I like. The drappier the better, most of the stuff I wear is vintage because it's the cheapest way to get something really fabulous. Sometime you can get something that looks grandma-ish, but then you cut off the stuff that covers it up and it's like see through, it's hot, and witchy at the same time. I feel like I'm suppose to be witchy, with my music I wanted to do... I'm working with a producer right now and we're working on is more tribal elements like drums cumbias and reggaeton-ish but really mixed with goth textures. So I want to kind of exude all of that, where I'm gonna be goth, but I'm also gonna be ghetto and show my ass.

Raven: Where do you get your inspiration when it comes to your look?

San Cha: A lot of street wear, it's also just a feeling. I feel like I can't really control the way I'm gonna shop, you feel it I like that piece and you get it. It's almost like it's calling you, the inspiration is really everyone.

Raven: Are there any artist you looked up to growing up?

San Cha: Yeah, the typical latina story Selena, Gloria Tervi (first of all), Shakira. As I got more into music I started getting into Led Zeppelin, Janis Joplin, when I started getting into english music. Jimi Hendrix, his crazy stage antics are my like my thing. The Doors Jim Morrison yes!

Raven: Given the chance to perform or to be featured in a song who would that be?

San Cha: Bomba Estéreo probably I've been obsessed with them for like the past week. They're from Colombia, they're electro but cumbia, very traditional cumbia and Colombian music. So they use all these electronic elements that kind of trip you out, but still hip hop and reggaeton-ish. I would love to do anything with them and just pick their brain

Raven: You had a show in San Fran not to long ago, what was it about?

San Cha: It was a whole production called Transfixed, focused on transgender issues, of that nature. There theme was gender within an environment and I have that song Straight to Hell that is my gender and sexuality within a religious environment. So like that's perfect, it was a 3 day event and I was given 7 minutes on stage which I also included the new version on Crown Me.

Raven: I read that you will be visiting the L.A. and will be performing out here for the first time. Where and when can we go see you perform?

San Cha: I will performing at Mustache Mondays in downtown L.A. April 30th, I believe I'm opening up for someone.  May 2nd I'll be performing at MJ'S Bar for there event called WHORE HOUSE. So I'm booked for those 2 nights.

Raven: I know you have a few tracks out on the net, when can we expect another EP or Lp?

San Cha: It's going to be a full length album, but the deadline I guess would be June 30th. I didn't want to put a deadline to it but people have been bugging me about it, and my producer said He wants to have it done before his 30th B-day. So I said if my producer wants a deadline I'm down, so his date was June 30th.

Raven: Is there a song you have out now that has a lot of meaning to you and why?

San Cha: Crown Me is the song I love to perform the most because it talks about acceptance and it's like a tragic beauty queen story, how all of us want to be accepted and some of us will go to far. It talks about my turning point in my life where I was like I don't give a F**k anymore. There was a time in my life where I was super shy and now it's like No bitches I'm not shy anymore and I don't care.

Raven: As you grow more as an artist, do you think your style will change and do you think it will go more of a mainstream style?

San Cha: I think my music is already pop, because it's pop music format. So I don't know how else to give in should be like my thing. To change my style would be to change my fan base and I think people can get use to it after a while, more then me get use to them.  I don't think at this point i would want to change my producer.

Raven: Well thank you so much for doing this.

San Cha: No thank you, and talk to you pretty soon.

Raven: Have a good night bye.

San Cha: You to bye.

MADONNA - MDNA

Madonna

The queen of pop is back once again and letting us have it. This has to be my favorite album since her Confessions On A Dance Floor album. Some of her tracks have a feel of old Madonna infused with the new sounds of today. Many may say she's pass her prime, but I say keep going girl. She's 53 and still moving as if she's in her 20's, so why not do it until she breaks a hip (knock on wood lol). I have to say the top 3 tracks I'm loving and have on repeat are, Gang Bang, Some Girls, and Love Spent
If you haven't gotten a chance to listen to it you can sample and download her album here.

DPHILL SPANGLISH THE INTERVIEW

DPhill Spanglish

He is a hip hop/dance artist from Dallas, Texas, who has started a controversial movement called the XY MOVEMENT. Some calling it gender bending and others calling him androgynous. He say it's a freedom of expression, and fashion. He doesn't label himself as anything only as "I'M JUST FREE", he says putting a label only limits you on what you can do. The purpose of this XY movement is to let everyone know, you should not let fear hold you back and to take a risk. His vocals and style of raping gives off a vibe between OutKast and Ludacris, 2 well known hip hop artists of our time. His lyrics tell a great story and speaks of what he's gone through. Theres no doubt that we will see this young man rise from the ground and shine like a star.

Phone Interview

Raven: How you doing?

DPhill: I'm doing good man, traveling to this photo shoot right now.

Raven: Ok sounds good, so lets get this going, when did you start rapping?

DPhill: I started rapping when I was in 3rd grade, actually I started in 2nd grade doing free style. In the 8th grade I laid my first track and then I actually started pursuing it realizing I can something with it around umm... 16 I in the 10th grade.

Raven: For your readers out there, In 5 words how would you explain your sound?

DPhill: I'm sticking to the genre called Organic which means kind of like letting the music come together. So you can compare it to some form of rock, a little bit of funk, of coarse hip hop, um a little bit of classical. I'm really influenced by a lot of people like Erykah Badu, Voodoo Doll 84, of coarse a lot of rock music like Jimmy Hendricks. So it has this experimental feel, just going with the flow, not really trying to hard just letting the music come out.

Raven: Where do you get your inspiration to write your songs and whats your favorite part about the process?

DPhill: I get my inspiration from every day life, I be going through something and a lot of times I get mad. Thats when I get my best songs when I'm angry, it's kind of a release. I'm a photographer as well and I see pictures and I get ideas in my mind and I just write about that. Really my songs are more like self help kind of like psychology where I can tell my story and hopefully help somebody else.

Raven: Who are your top 5 artist you listen to?

DPhill: Right now I'm a huge fan, shout out to Kid Cudi he's like my big brother, I relate to his music so much, I listen to a lot of random rock like Shevil, I listen to Alogon Heat, OutKast, Erykah Badu, Daft Punk, and random DubStep stuff.

Raven: I f you were given a chance to open up for an artist who is on tour right now, who would it be?

DPhill: Kid Cudi hands down.

Raven: What is the XY Movement, what it is, how it started and what's the purpose for it?

DPhill: The Xy Movement started as an idea in my mind and I was really venturing out, and expanding my mind to think outside of the box from what was normal. Then one day I had an idea of wearing lip stick, tights and different face paint and then I was like WOW! Theres more to life you know then just the norm. So I just started venturing out man and it took me a while to feel confident where I can do it in public and not worry about what people think. You know coming from the black community and the south it's really conservative. Texas for sure... a lot of people are quote on quote closed minded, so coming from that culture I just started thinking things together and just trying things that I like and I found what I liked. The whole XY Movement purpose really is to encourage to let go of things that hold them back such as fear. We are having a XY fashion show in June which will be a 3 day event. First day would be a party, 2nd day the fashion show and the 3rd day will be a gathering. So we'll keep you guys posted on dates and all that stuff soon.

Raven: Where can your fans and your readers take a listen and mixtape?

DPhill: Hotnewhiphop.com and search for DPHILL SPANGLISH, and you can watch my videos on Youtube, follow me on twitter and you can LIKE my facebook page (links are below the black and white picture). I'm actually putting out an album called UNZIPPED on ITunes (On sale NOW!)

Raven: Before we end the interview is there any words of wisdom you may have for the readers out there?

DPhill: Take your own advice... I would say that to everyone. A lot of times we don't realize that when we give advice, we're giving out advice that we need too. It's kind of self conscious, so I would say to anybody take your own advice. Take what life has to offer and just grow, to just push the best way that you can and to keep on living, no matter how are it gets or dark life seems the same just keep with it.

Raven: Thank you for taking the time to do this interview with me.

DPhill: Thank you sir.

PRESTON BOWMAN

Preston Bowman

ElectroPop artist from the US making his first interview debut with yours truly. I stumbled upon him on Twitter and discovered his music. He has a unique sound and has a very original and underground feel to him. As you may or may not know I'm a big fan of the underground scene and it's artists. Once I heard Verti-Go I wanted to listen to more and found myself getting hooked yet to another track called Toxic Demeanor.

Preston Bowman the Interview

RAVEN - Hi Preston how are you?

PRESTON BOWMAN - Fine thanks how are you?

RAVEN - I'm great thank you... Finally we're able to do this interview, seems like there was always something getting in the way right?

PRESTON BOWMAN - Yes I know! lol but at last we are here so to speak ;)

RAVEN - Yes that is true, so tell us who is Preston for your readers out there?

PRESTON BOWMAN - Basically if Britney Spears married Blink 182 and had a dorky gay sarcastic son, that'd be me.

RAVEN - Wow thats quit the combo lol!

PRESTON BOWMAN - Yeah imagine that sex tape lol!

RAVEN - No thanks I rather not ha! So describe your music and it's sound.

PRESTON BOWMAN - Electro dance with pop punk roots, electropop usually sums it up. My tastes are very electric and I like to show that in my music.

RAVEN - How long have you been creating your music?

PRESTON BOWMAN - I've been making music since I was 18 so about 10 years now. Wow I never realized it's been that long lol.

RAVEN - That is a long time but you're still young, so in the next 5 years where do you think you'll be with your music?

PRESTON BOWMAN - Well I'm changing gears a bit, learned some new things, take some music college courses. In 5 years I want to be on the road in some capacity. I've toyed with the idea of starting a band but thats another animal entirely.

RAVEN - At the top of your head what song really represents you the best?

PRESTON BOWMAN - Crazy Boy, it was a very short toss up between that and Hostile Takeover.

RAVEN - Are there any artist you would like to work with on your next project?

PRESTON BOWMAN - Would love to work with Blood On The Dancefloor, and course Raven! On the label peep scale I could see me and Ke$ha having some fun, but I'd probably have to be her designated driver lol!

RAVEN - Well that sounds like a good list and thank you for adding me to that too ;) Lets talk about the projects you've done so far. You've released a EP Audi-Oh and a album Toxic Demeanor, where can we get our little hands on them?

PRESTON BOWMAN - For the Ep you can visit my band camp account join my email list for that free download. That was something I put together after the release of my first album Toxic Demeanor which you can download mp3 on ITunes, Amazon or CdBaby for cd format.

RAVEN - There are a lot of gay artist breaking out on the mainstream charts how does that make you feel?

PRESTON BOWMAN - I'm glad that more gay artist are hitting the mainstream, we still have a ways to go. I just wish the out put was a little more diverse.

RAVEN - Are there any plans for any live shows this year?

PRESTON - Nothing laid out yet, I might put out another album before I go live. I'm thinking about doing a few web shows here and there.

RAVEN - Do you have a big following or are you still building the fan base?

PRESTON BOWMAN - That's a good question. Social media is a wonderful thing but it's a little hard to decipher who likes or follows you versus a fan. I would say I will always be building my fan base. It's kind of like trying to give a speech on a subway with everyone yelling. At some point I know I'll have to leave PA to get a bigger fan base.

RAVEN - If you had to move and make that big change for a bigger fan base where would you go?

PRESTON BOWMAN - I honestly haven't fully made the decision on if I want "big" vs "indie" so I'll cross that one when I get there. I've been thinking either New York or the UK. Talk about extremes lol!

RAVEN - Well I can't wait to see what you come up with next, and wish you the best of luck on it all. Is there anything you would like to add before the interview ends?

PRESTON BOWMAN - Is this the insert shameless plug question? LOL please visit me at my site prestoninside.com sign up for my email list and get a free EP. Oh and please prepare to see more of me in the future! Thanks for having me here Raven.

RAVEN - It has been a pleasure to have done this interview with you and hopefully once you've finished your second album we can do an update.

PRESTON BOWMAN - Of course, thank you the pleasure is mine as well.

The Interview with Edmond

Raven: Edmond a pleasure to finally have you doing an interview with me, a long awaiting but well worth the wait, and right in the nick of time with your new album LOVE AND POP, which is amazing btw.
Edmond: Thanks a lot! I’m glad you love it! It’s true that this time it took me longer than usual to have it released but I wanted it to be the closest to perfection I could. I worked really hard on it and it took me two years in total to finalize my project. I wanted to be able to make discover to my listeners the kind of tracks they are used to listen from me but also that I was also able to deal with other styles like jazz or pop from the 60’s.

Raven: So lets go back in time a bit, how it all started in Paris, France in the late 90's. From what I've read you have been influenced by electronic music, along with other styles. Who did you listen to or looked up to, that influenced your music back then?

Edmond:
When I was in Paris, I used to listen a lot to video game music. I was particularly attracted by 8bit sounds. My favourite artist at this time was Yuzo Koshiro. He was able to create amazing dance music with the poor systems we had at that time like the Genesis or the Super Nintendo. I advice you to have a listen to the OST of “Streets Of Rage” 1 and 2 for the Genesis, and “Super Adventure Island” for the Super Nintendo. They are truly amazing for that time!

Raven: In all these years creating music, how has the music world treated you?
Edmond: I think I always had a positive response from the public. I’m not really self-confident so it was kind of hard to me to accpet that when one friend told me my music was good, it really was. Actually, I had to wait until a few weeks ago, when I had a lot of positive feedbacks from radios from all around the world to finally realize that what I was making a good job. I really needed those external feedbacks to get a little bit more of confidence.

Raven: With 2 albums out, do you have any favorites from both, and if so which ones and why?
Edmond:
That’s a hard question. Logically when I make the selection for the songs that I will release, it means that I spent a lot of time on them and that I love them each in their ways…. Let’s think about it.
I would say that for “Outrageous” my two favorites are the two main songs I released as maxi singles which are “Back in club” and “Strawberry”.
“Back in Club” for the memories it brings back to me. I wrote this song when I was living in Tokyo and really missed a club I used to go with my best friend. When I was in Tokyo, I didn’t have a PC so I couldn’t compose music so I concentrate mainly on writing loads of lyrics and practicing my voice by going to karaoke three times a week at least.
“Strawberry” for the music video that I had a lot of fun to create with MSPaint. I remember taking pictures of the movements of my mouth to make it on the strawberries. It was a really funny time for me. I knew I could have made it with a lot faster program but I intentionally did it this way. I’m always up for a new challenge!

Raven: I saw that you performed at an event early this summer, where was it and how was it to be back on stage?
Edmond:

It took place in Montcada, a city near Barcelona where I’m currently living. It was a real pleasure for me to be back on stage as it had been 4 years I didn’t have any live performance. It’s always funny when you go back on stage because most of the time, as an electro singer, people always think that you’re going to do all the show in playback but that is something I just cannot do. It’s true that it’s kind of hard for me as I also compose the music so I can’t do everything at the same time but I always sing! This for sure. I couldn’t forgive myself to make my fans wait for such a long time to play them a CD hahaha

Raven: Will we be seeing a European tour anytime soon, or any up coming local events?
Edmond:

For the moment, I’m still concentrating on the promotion of my new album “love and pop” and am in contact with various radios around the globe. My songs will be played in radios fromFrance, Spain, Germany, Belgium, Russia, Romania, Greece, Canada, US, Netherlands, UK, Switzerland, and Czech Republic. This weekend, I will have an interview on Skype with a radio in Quebec. At the beginning of September, I’ll have another one in Belgium and another one in October in France. I must say that for the moment I’m kind of busy but I would really love to make a local event here to present some new songs from “love and pop”. If so, don’t worry, I will let you know on Internet ;)

Raven: what can we expect in 2012?
Edmond: First, for the end of 2011, I already have some plans. I just published yesterday my latest music video for the song “Tokyo, mon amour”. When I have spare time I will try to make new music videos to keep on promoting songs from “love and pop”. I have planned to make two new music videos but still don’t know exactly when it will happen and for what songs it will be so this could go until 2012.
I also have a project to make a featuring with a new talented composer (Richard R.) and am currently working with a spanish dj (Edy Ramas) for a remix version of "Back in club". When  all of this is done maybe I'll start working on a new album! Who knows? One thing for sure, is that I never stop doing stuff about music so keep on following my adventures!

Raven: Where do you want to go with your music in the future?
Edmond: My goal is not to become famous and to live under the spotlights. All I really want is to be able to share my music and universe with the most people I can and discover by this way new people and new horizons. I would love, of course, to have the chance to make a concert in Japan which is the country I cherish the most! Maybe one day…

Raven: Is there anyone you would like to work with ?
Edmond: There are a lot of artists I would dream to work with like The Pet Shop Boys, Yasuharu Konishi, Simian Mobile Disco. Actually I’m always open to new featurings or collaborations so if you’re an artist reading this article, don’t hesitate to contact me! I don’t bite (not straight-away I mean hahaha). It’s always a great experience to have the chance to mix different sounds together.

Raven: For all your fans out there, what would you like to tell them?
Edmond: I would like to thank them for keep on following me! They are my source of strength and inspiration. I’m always happy to get comments on Facebook and be able to interact with them. I always reply to all the messages so don’t hesitate to contact me, I’m always happy to keep in touch with you all!

Raven: Well I hope that we can do this again soon, lots of love from the US and good luck with your new album and future projects.
Edmond: Thanks a lot for your time! It was a real pleasure to have the opportunity to express myself ! I send you back sunny rays from Barcelona and hope to listen to your new songs really soon too! Best of luck in your projects! You know I love what you do ;)

JER BER JONES - THE INTERVIEW

Jer Ber Jones

When I hear  Model 4 Me the first thing that comes to mind is, when I first saw Jer Ber Jones perform live at the Key Club along with Dirty Sanchez and Avenue D. Ever since that night I was hooked, and have not stopped playing her music. Many may not understand her artistic and Tranimal ways, but it works for her. Without a doubt the music and lyrics are incredible, and who wouldn't want to be a model or have telepathic powers? I recommend to listen and buy Jer Ber Jones - Greatest Hits Volume 2, and her latest project called Push My Button (Feat. Jer Ber Jones) - Berdache.

Interview

Raven: Hi JerBer, thank you for doing this interview, how are you?

Jerber Jones: I am doing great. Thank you.

Raven: The first thing I have to ask is where did you come up with the term tranimal, and what is a tranimal for those who don't know?

Jerber Jones: Tranimal popped out of my head when I was looking around for a word as an alternative to "drag queen", I have never really considered myself a drag queen. The word Tranimal seemed to fit what I was going through at the time. As per usual, I am a trend setter and everyone has since adapted the word from me. A "tranimal" would be someone who dresses in drag, but perhaps a bit more artistic, or street-urchinly, or performance artsy than your regular, tired, drag queen.

Raven: For those who are just discovering Jerber Jones, who is Jerber Jones?

Jerber Jones: She is America's favorite Mormon polygamist, fashion/runway model/singer, and single-mom.

Raven: What inspires you to write the lyrics that you do and do you produce your own music?

Jerber Jones: Making music that pushes the boundries of tried and true pop. I always have some lyric popping into my head, it's been that way since I was a tiny kid.

Raven: You have a remakable and unique sound, do you think you will change your style to adapt to an ever-changing world of music?

Jerber Jones: My music is always changing. In fact, people are always amazed at how many different styles I seem to fly in and out of.  Adapt is a word I would use cautiously. I find my music has, unfortunately, been ahead of the trends. So perhaps you would ask "Will the ever changing world of music adapt to Jer Ber's style?"

Raven: Is there an artist you would like to work with?

Jerber Jones: Many. I always welcome collaborations with truly talented musicians. I'd love to sing & make music with Royksopp, Karin Dreijer Andersson, Yoko Ono, Dieter Meier & Boris Blank, Brendan Perry, Millionyoung, Jack White...just to name a few.

Raven: What kind of following do you have? Meaning people and with your music.

Jerber Jones: On a global scale, my following is small. I have about 2,500+ active fans on facebook. They all help me in creating the myth that is Jerilyn Jones.

Raven: Do you have any up coming event?

Jerber Jones: I have been turning down gigs left and right in order to record new music. I am also tired of singing in big discos and clubs with sub-standard sound systems and tiny budgets. My preference is to perform for a sit-down theatre/cabaret type audience. My work is layered with multi-media, dance, word, costumes and scenery.  I am currently looking for a new theatre residency.

Raven: It's been a while since you came out with a full LP, will we be seeing one soon?

Jerber Jones: Yes. I have an album of over 15 cover songs coming out this summer, it's a groundbreaking album. It's the first time anyone has ever released a collection of songs to have 2 (or more) versions of the same song, sung by the same person, in a mans voice and in a woman's voice. It's called "Berdache - Covered". It's inspired by the "two-spirit" Native American Indian community.  I am also trying to finish up some various new original songs that I have been working on. I always have a lot of songs brewing on the burners. The music industry is in shambles right now. It's been tough finding funding for my "trranimal" music. So it takes a long time when I am doing everything all by myself.

Raven: Well Jerber time to say good bye to the kids ;) Thank you again for your time, and I hope to chat with you soon, best of luck with all your projects and future events.

Jerber Jones: Thanks loverhole. Please visit my website http://robbied.com or http://facebook.com/jerberjones for up to date information.
